Community Garden
Thursday, July 8th, 2010
Recently we have taken the opportunity to produce a Community Garden in my home village of Dalmellington in conjunction with 33rd Ayrshire Scout Group, who are celebrating their Centenary Year this year. The idea for the garden came from both groups looking to make a small feature to highlight the Centenary Year and also our charity Cancer Research UK. We were delighted when Mr Mark Gibson of Craigengillan Estate offered us a small piece of land along the AirField Walk at the opening of the Estate. Lots of people take a short walk along the river on this walk so it would be perfect for people to spend a little time sitting in, relaxing, looking at the lovely flowers and seeing the beautiful butterflys.
Everything in the garden has been donated, amazing, which means we have many people to thank. Mark Gibson (land), Craig Dempsey (clearing land), Gordon Whiteford of Barr Ltd (top soil), Community Services EAC, Dick McKinstry (planting), Wallace McDowall Fabrication (signage), Begg Scotland (plant) plus many more individuals for their donations. In the garden is also a lovely Sun Dial which has been donated to the Scout group by the local Masonic Lodge.
The opening of the garden was a huge success on Thurs 1st July 2010, lots of people came along including all 3 local Councillors, committee, family, friends & many supporters of both groups. We were delighted to have top supporter of our charity, Lady Provost Winifred Sloan of South Ayrshire Council open our half of the garden, which was executed perfectly. The crowd also enjoyed her delightful speech. Guests took part in a wee photo shoot, a cup of tea with home baking and a few short lessons in knot tying. The weather was very kind to us, with NO midges, perfect lovely evening. Thank you to all who attended.
Photos are on our gallery page now. Make sure you visit our garden soon – o and if you do the watering cans are behind the centre tree !! Thanks x
