We are well known in Ayrshire for organising big party events like the Butterfly Ball, Gents Nights and of course Ladies Days, however on Sunday 29th April in Dalmellington, we saw the first of our new sporting events, promoting Healthy Living in line with our charity Cancer Research UK. “Just 30 minutes of moderate activity a day, five days a week, can have a positive effect on your health and the more active you are, the more you can reduce your risk of cancer”.
Lorna said, “This event was my brother Brian’s brainwave, as he loves to compete in Triathlons all over Scotland. We opened the event in January and in only 4 weeks it was fully booked. Our 100 participants have spent the past few months training very hard for the event, which has certainly made each of them healthier in 2012. Since we are local Ambassadors for the charity, I think it is important that we promote all aspects of awareness to as many age groups as possible and with healthy living and exercise being one of the main ones, this was the perfect challenge. We asked each participant to gather sponsorship from family & friends for the charity, as it was a massive challenge for most, comprising of 400m swim, 10k cycle & a 4k run.
The weather was kind, no rain, although it was blowing a gale, but at least it wasn’t snowing. Everyone gave it their all and apart from 2 who were not able to finish due to crashing out, they all finished with PB’s (since it was the first event).
Most of our participants were new to the sport however we did have a few who have competed before, which was great as we used them as examples in our first heat to show everyone else what to expect. One of these competitors, who actually won the 1st Individual was, Greg Turner from Ayrodynamics Club. Greg is only 19 and is currently in the Scottish National Triathlon Squad and on a sports scholarship at Stirling Uni. He trains every single day of the year with National Coach Chris Volley as he is pushing hard at the moment to make the team for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, and he is making it his big goal to be at the Rio 2016 Olympics! Greg completed our challenge in 40min 13sec!!
Greg said about the event “Lorna, I’d just like to congratulate you and your team for the organisation of yesterdays race. I can honestly say that it was better marshaled and organised than some of the so called elite races I’ve done in the UK or Europe. As long as it is possible to keep it in my early season schedule Lorna, I promise you I will try to make your truly worthwhile event every year Good luck for the future.” A true raising Star who we were thrilled to have participate in our very first event and to give this high praise to our team.
However it was the taking part which counted and each of our participants were amazing. The top results were,
1st Male – Greg Turner, 40.13.
2nd Male – Leslie-James McDerment, 47.55
3rd Male – Norman Neilson, 49.55
1st Female – Melanie Martin, 53.31
2nd Female – Lyndsey Bland, 59.31
3rd Female – Melissa Napier, 1.01.17
1st Team – The Doon 2, Douglas Gooding & Mark Kerr, both Teachers from Doon Academy, 55.41
1st Local – Stuart Dunsford, Dalmellington 57.51
It was a fun, friendly event with a great atmosphere and community spirit. I would like to thank all the marshalls & helpers who gave up their Sunday to stand in the cold, ensuring the safety of our participants, you were all amazing and have really encouraged everyone. I would also like to thank our sponsors, East Ayrshire Council and Doon Valley Leisure Centre staff, Lidle Ayr, Ionnotti Bros Cash & Carry, Bill Bristow, Class One Traffic Management, SM Signs, Solar Glass, Alister Firth & Robert McKinstry. I would also like to thank a few of the Ayrodynamics members for their assistance & encouragement during the planning and on the day itself, you were all invaluable, thank you. But most of all a MASSIVE THANK YOU to our 100 participants who braved the cold and took on the challenge.
We had no expectations about how much we would raise, so to announce £9,000 on the day was overwhelming, we are thrilled. This £9,000 will be full donated to Cancer Research UK to be spent on world class research into over 200 different tyoes of cancer. This will bring Butterfly Events total raised since 2007 to £190,000!! Heres to 2013 event, we look forward to seeing many of you back again, so keep the training going, or why not start training now and watch this space for the launch of our next sporting event.

450 stunningly dressed guests loved the fun packed American themed evening at this years Butterfly Ball, organised by voluntry by Butterfly Events. Highlights included, our drinks reception sponsored by Wallace Express with entertainment from the 50 strong “Musichoir”. An amazing meal provided by the award winning team at Ayr Racecourse, a fun charity casino, silent & grand auction, raffle draw, a big competition to win a Mini for the weekend, ending the evening dancing to Showband Waterfront.
I am delighted to announce our fundraising total for the evening reached £11,000, which means our grand total raised for Cancer Research UK since 2007 now stands at £180,100!
We would never be able to reach these kinds of figures without the amazing support from our supporters, thank you so much to anyone who has ever come along, bought a raffle ticket or donated a prize.
Cancer Research UK will spend 80p from every £1 of our fund raising, researching new treatments for all types of cancer. We are helping to make a huge difference.
