Recently we have taken the opportunity to produce a Community Garden in my home village of Dalmellington in conjunction with 33rd Ayrshire Scout Group, who are celebrating their Centenary Year this year. The idea for the garden came from both groups looking to make a small feature to highlight the Centenary Year and also our charity Cancer Research UK. We were delighted when Mr Mark Gibson of Craigengillan Estate offered us a small piece of land along the AirField Walk at the opening of the Estate. Lots of people take a short walk along the river on this walk so it would be perfect for people to spend a little time sitting in, relaxing, looking at the lovely flowers and seeing the beautiful butterflys.
Everything in the garden has been donated, amazing, which means we have many people to thank. Mark Gibson (land), Craig Dempsey (clearing land), Gordon Whiteford of Barr Ltd (top soil), Community Services EAC, Dick McKinstry (planting), Wallace McDowall Fabrication (signage), Begg Scotland (plant) plus many more individuals for their donations. In the garden is also a lovely Sun Dial which has been donated to the Scout group by the local Masonic Lodge.
The opening of the garden was a huge success on Thurs 1st July 2010, lots of people came along including all 3 local Councillors, committee, family, friends & many supporters of both groups. We were delighted to have top supporter of our charity, Lady Provost Winifred Sloan of South Ayrshire Council open our half of the garden, which was executed perfectly. The crowd also enjoyed her delightful speech. Guests took part in a wee photo shoot, a cup of tea with home baking and a few short lessons in knot tying. The weather was very kind to us, with NO midges, perfect lovely evening. Thank you to all who attended.
Photos are on our gallery page now. Make sure you visit our garden soon – o and if you do the watering cans are behind the centre tree !! Thanks x

Ayr Racecourse was the venue for our 4th Butterfly Ball on Saturday 27th March in aid of Cancer Research UK. It was another fabulous evening attended by 500 guests who enjoyed a drinks reception, sponsored by Ayr Racecourse with entertainment provided by Dalmellington Band. Once guests were seated they were treated to a dance show by Cumnock Highland Dance School, with dancers from age 4-19 years. The evening was full of fun with our silent and grand auction ending the evening with a spot of dancing to resident Butterfly showband Waterfront, who were amazing as ever. A fabulous £15,000 was raised on the night and will be fully donated to our charity Cancer Research UK, bringing our total in the past 4 years to £115,000. Lorna Dempsey, Founder, said “we are not a big committee and are not working on this full time, however we are dedicated to giving our supporters a really good night out for a reasonable amount of money whilst supporting a very worth while cause. I would like to thank everyone who donated a prize or bought a raffle ticket you have contributed to our fabulous total. And a massive thank you to all of our guests for making it another event to remember Thank you, together we will beat cancer” The date is booked for 2011, watch the website for details.

I was invited to speak at Dalmellington Guild on Monday 8th February to share my story of Butterfly Events. I really enjoyed my evening letting the ladies know about who we are, what we have achieved and our future aims. Of course it was topped by the lovely tea I received! Thank you very much to the committee for inviting me along and also for the kind donation they made to our cause.

22 teams-106 guys & 4 ladies, had a great day on Sunday 7th February at Emotion Karting, Ayr whilst raising funds for our charity taking part in our first sponsored endurance karting event.
The 1st heat started at 10am and included, Formula Five, Mario Karters, Petrol heads, GQC, The Racecourse road runners, JDs Racers & Bloo Bungle. In heat 2 was, Village People, Flat oot!, AG Motorsport, Hill Billies, Air Kart, Bone-aparts, Isabelles Lot & The Goonies. Lastly we had Toyko Drift, 3508, The Lungers, Stealth Bummers, GSK, Break Glass Emergency & Jammy Dodgers in heat 3.
There was a lot of testosterone & competitiveness on show, especially when the black flags were out! Karters pushed during their 2 hour race to be the top 2 in their heat going forward to the hour long final in the evening. Reaching the final was, GQC, Petrolheads, AG Motorsport, Bone-aparts, Tokyo Drift & Break Glass Emergency.
In preparation for the final we enjoyed music from JB Band, had a visit from Special Guest The Stig, watched a karting showcase and had the finale run down from BBC F1 presenter Lee McKenzie.
The final result was in 3rd place, Tokyo Drift. 2nd place, AG Motorsport. And in 1st place, Petrolheads. Congratulations!!!
I would like to say well done and a huge thanks to all the teams, its not the winning, its the taking part that counts. It was a very successful day for our first time at Emotion Karting. My thanks must also go to everyone who sponsored the Karters, to everyone at Emotion Karting, you were great. To our resident band for the day, JB Band. To The Stig for his guest appearance, and of course to BBC F1 presenter Lee McKenzie for presenting our prizes. And we must not forget Dougie & John for the lovely buffet the racers enjoyed.
I am delighted to report we estimated on the day we will raise £4,400 from racers sponsorships and will be fully donated to Cancer Research UK.
CHECK OUT - Take a look at the photos from the day in our gallery. There is a DVD available from the event at only £10 with money being donated back to Butterfly Events, email me to order. Log onto Emotion Karting website, www.emotionkarting.com for more info on their latest events.
